Smûk facilities & experience
There’s no need to plan anything here. Outdoor life simply happens.
On the Smûk farmyard, there is always something to do, smell, or hear. Insects hum, the air smells of freshly mown grass, and a chicken cackles somewhere in the distance. Children explore, adults slow down. Before you know it, you’re sitting with your feet in the grass, losing all track of time.
That is Smûk.

Outdoor kitchen
On the camping field, you’ll find a cool outdoor kitchen under a tent, free for all guests to use. It’s handy if you haven’t brought everything with you, but above all, it’s just very cozy. Cooking together with your Smûk neighbors might just become the best moment of your day.
Want to brew a cup of coffee and sit in the shade for a while? You can do that here too. The outdoor kitchen is just as much a place for a chat as it is for cooking.
In the outdoor kitchen, you’ll find a small fridge, induction hobs, pans, cutlery, and crockery. Next to the outdoor kitchen is a wood-fired pizza oven and there is a campfire spot for communal use. You can borrow fire bowls and fill a cart with wood for a small fee.
Hot tub under the stars
Warm water, fresh air, and a starry sky above your head. The wood-fired hottub is included with most nature houses and can be booked extra for the glamping tents and camping pitches.
Fire it up, wait for the water to get warm, and step in. That’s all you need for a perfect evening in the Frisian countryside…
The living room
In the old farm barn, you’ll find a warm living room with soft light bulbs, farmhouse tables, and vintage chairs. A place to be together, but also to retreat for a moment.
Spend an evening playing Rummikub or enjoy a gourmet grill with the family. Sit quietly in a chair and listen to the creaking of the old timber frame. The little ones can enjoy themselves in the play kitchen.
Or walk in with rosy cheeks from your hike for a cold beer from the fridge. Simply note down what you take in a notebook; trust is a matter of course here.
Smûk [pronounced smoek]
is a cozy feeling,
coziness, warmth, domesticity and being together.
Farm shop
Is your stomach starting to rumble? Take a stroll to the farm shop. Fresh vegetables, a good piece of cheese, a bottle of wine, or a steak from the Red Pied cow on the yard. The freezer is stocked with meat from our own farm and stews for those who don’t feel like cooking.
If you’re lucky, Crista will have just baked her famous apple pies to go with your coffee!
Play & adventure
At Smûk, children are never bored. From the swing rope in the hay bales to canoes and SUPs on the water. From cuddling goats and stroking our old Frisian horse Tjitske, to gathering eggs from the chickens. Or baking sand pies in the mud kitchen.
There is always something to discover. No screens, no program. Just being outside.
“What a lovely place this is. Everything has been carried out with so much care and attention: from the toilets to the accommodation, to the extras like the pizza oven, hottub, and boats.”
Nynke Teertstra
Animals in the yard
Goats, horses, and cows are just part of the family here. The Red Pied cows and their calves graze in the meadow, Famke the dog wanders the yard, and the chickens do what chickens do.
Quite special: the Black-tailed Godwit has returned to our meadow. This Kening fan de Greide — the King of the Meadows — thrives best where nature is in balance. By mowing later, raising the water level, and creating wetlands, we can hear his call again in the spring. Bring your binoculars and go spot them.
Out on the water
The grounds are located on the Pier Christiaansloot. From the jetty, you can sail straight into the Frisian lakes district, towards Tjeukemeer, Sloten, or Langweer.
Grab a canoe — free for all guests — or rent a SUP or the Smûk sloop for a day on the water. The water map, life jackets, and a beautiful route are ready for you.
You can swim in the natural waters all year round, summer or winter. Find a spot along the bank and jump in.
Sanitary facilities
A fresh shower after a day outdoors — we’ve got you covered at Smûk. For campers and bell tent guests, there are two sanitary buildings: one on the camping field and one in the farm stable. The latter was renovated in 2026. Both buildings have showers and toilets. Hot water and showers are free of charge.
Praat Kafee – for groups
In addition to the living room, Smûk has a separate, heated space that you can reserve as a group (up to 12 people). Your own place to come together with family or friends.
Everyone sleeps in their own tent, cottage, or camper, but you’ll meet again around the long farmhouse table. Breakfast together, enjoy a gourmet grill, have drinks, or just catch up. With the children running around in the living room and a good glass of wine on the table.
The room is tastefully decorated in the Smûk style: authentic, warm, and no-nonsense.
Praat Kafee can also be reserved year-round for meetings or workshops, for example.
How does Smûk feel?
Let’s talk about the name Smûk Recreatie. Because what does smûk mean? The Frisians among us will know the word, yet the feeling of smûk cannot be captured in a single word, just like the farm itself. The same applies to the Danish word ‘hygge’, which can be compared to ‘coziness’ and ‘snugness’.
Smûk is the coziness of renting a hottub by your tent and the conviviality of drinks on a boat. Baking pizzas together in the wood-fired oven on pizza night and reading a book in the barn in a lazy chair. It is being able to slow down and devote yourself with attention to all kinds of soothing tasks. Time goes as fast as you want it to. Smûk Recreation is the place to muddle around for hours.
Smûk in summer is petting goats with wet combed hair and walking along the dike overlooking the village. In the winter, Smûk is driving up and down with a cart full of wood, toheat up thehot tub and enjoy a good glass of red wine. Smûk is finding yourself in the heart of Friesland, in the middle of the meadows and still being at home. The coziness of home yet right next to grazing cows. It’s brushing horses and collecting eggs. Toasting your own pizza by the wood-burning oven on pizza night. You can watch the sun rise and set, trudge across the countryside in your boots and snuggle up against each other on a boat.
When you walk into your beautifully styled Smûk Bell, Smûk Tiny, Smûk Huske you immediately feel the warmth. You are equipped with all the comforts of home while surrounded by animals and greenery. Next to the Smûk Huske, you will regularly see a pubescent goat bypassing the gates at the animal enclosure, only to loudly ask you to take it back to its enclosure. Smûk is cooking a sumptuous dinner in the farmhouse kitchen, then eating it with your bare feet in the grass.
