Smûk environment
Both nature and animals are lovingly cared for on this farm. Everything from frogs to cows gets the peace and flowers space to flourish. Nature-friendly banks and clean ditches make Smûk a fine home for small and large life. The banks where the boats are moored will be dotted with native flowers and herb-rich grassland. So you can take a sloop directly from the farm to TJeukemeer. Want something to eat or drink nearby? Then walk to the nice terrace of the Dikke Tût near the bridge in the village, or dine at restaurant the Fûke. You are also a 15-minute drive away in Lemmer, where Fem aan het Dok and Beachclub Lemmer are golden tips! No desire to leave the grounds? At Smûk, you are also welcome!
At Smûk you are also welcome with your own tent or cute little camper. Find a nice spot in the meadow and make yourself at home. Is your stomach starting to bubble? Then walk to the country store for some fresh vegetables or a Steak from the Red and White cow. If you’re lucky, Crista has just baked her famous apple tarts for coffee.
The site is located not only among the meadows, but also on the Pier Christiaansloot. So you can sail from the farm directly to TJeukemeer.
Pretty special is that on our meadow we have the Black-tailed Godwit back. This Kening van de Greide (King of the Landscape) thrives best where nature is in balance. Because of our way of working the land (delayed mowing date, higher water table & puddle grass) we hear the Black-tailed Godwit again in spring. Bring your binoculars and come spot these Primitive Dutch birds with us!
For children, there are play facilities on the farm and plenty of adventure to be had. From swinging rope in the hay bales to canoes and from cuddling goats and petting ponies to collecting eggs, there is always something to do. If you are ready for some wind in your hair, take a beautiful walk through the untouched area of the Rottige Meente. You can also explore the neighborhood by bike. Want to be pampered? Then take the car and within 15 minutes you will be in Lemmer and you can have terraces at the many waterfront cafes and restaurants. The ice creams there are also very good.
If you still have time to spare, it is also highly recommended to step back in time to old Friesland, with a visit to Hindeloopen. In this shipping village on the shores of the IJsselmeer, old traditions are still fully honored and sea shanties echo through the narrow streets and centuries-old monuments. Also, nature reserve Weerribben is beautiful for a hike.
Smûk [pronounced smoek].
is a cozy feeling,
coziness, warmth, domesticity and being together.
How does Smûk feel?
Let’s talk about the name Smûk Recreation. Because what does smûk mean? The Frisians among us will know the word, yet the feeling of smûk cannot be captured in one word, just like the farm. The same goes for the Danish word “hygge,” which can be compared to “coziness” and “snugness. Smûk is the coziness of renting a hot tub by your tent and the coziness of having drinks on a boat. Baking pizza together in wood oven on pizza night and reading a book in the barn on an easy chair. It is being able to slow down and throw yourself into all kinds of restful tasks with attention. Time goes as fast as you want it to. Smûk Recreation is the place to muddle around for hours.
Smûk in summer is petting goats with wet combed hair and walking along the dike overlooking the village. In the winter, Smûk is driving up and down with a cart full of wood, toheat up thehot tub and enjoy a good glass of red wine. Smûk is finding yourself in the heart of Friesland, in the middle of the meadows and still being at home. The coziness of home yet right next to grazing cows. It’s brushing horses and collecting eggs. Toasting your own pizza by the wood-burning oven on pizza night. You can watch the sun rise and set, trudge across the countryside in your boots and snuggle up against each other on a boat.
When you walk into your beautifully styled Smûk Belltent, Smûk Tiny or Smûk Huske you feel the warmth immediately. You are equipped with all the comforts of home while surrounded by animals and greenery. Next to the Smûk Huske, you will regularly see a pubescent goat bypassing the gates at the animal enclosure, only to loudly ask you to take it back to its enclosure. Smûk is cooking a sumptuous dinner in the farmhouse kitchen, then eating it with your bare feet in the grass.
